C and c grids cage1/18/2024 īiological experimentation on domestic guinea pigs has been carried out since the 17th century. Marketers tried to increase consumption of the animal outside South America. In the 1960s a modern breeding program was started in Peru that resulted in large breeds known as cuy mejorados ( improved cuy). They are raised for their meat and are a culinary staple in the Andes Mountains, where they are known as cuy. The animals are also used in folk medicine and in community religious ceremonies. Livestock breeds of the guinea pig play an important role in folk culture for many indigenous Andean peoples, especially as a food source. Many specialized breeds, with varying coat colors and textures, are selected by breeders. ![]() Organizations devoted to the competitive breeding of guinea pigs have been formed worldwide. Their docile nature, friendly responsiveness to handling and feeding, and the relative ease of caring for them have continued to make guinea pigs a popular choice of household pet. In Western society, the guinea pig has enjoyed widespread popularity as a pet since its introduction to Europe and North America by European traders in the 16th century. They were originally domesticated as livestock for a source of meat, and are still consumed in some parts of the world. Studies based on biochemistry and hybridization suggest they are domesticated animals that do not exist naturally in the wild, descendants of a closely related cavy species such as C. They originated in the Andes of South America. ![]() Despite their common name, guinea pigs are not native to Guinea, nor are they closely related biologically to pigs, and the origin of the name is still unclear. ![]() Breeders tend to use the word cavy to describe the animal, while in scientific and laboratory contexts, it is far more commonly referred to by the common name guinea pig. The guinea pig or domestic guinea pig ( Cavia porcellus), also known as the cavy or domestic cavy ( / ˈ k eɪ v i/ KAY-vee), is a species of rodent belonging to the genus Cavia in the family Caviidae.

Free instals FSNotes1/17/2024 ![]() The content is still in Markdown, but the links and related assets are in their own format. One solution to this is a container standard called TextBundle. This makes it a pain to move them between apps because you end up having to refactor your tags or links. The basic formatting is always the same – bold, headers, lists, etc – but the more advanced functionality, like cross links, folders, embedded images, all tend to have their own custom implementation. However, the problem with Markdown is that it is interpreted and rendered slightly different by each app. This means the app should just work with plain files on disk. Markdown handles all the formatting, so the files themselves must be accessible. Having now tried many different note taking apps, being able to test alternatives is easier if I can drop the existing files in. Syncing files over my private P2P encrypted network using Syncthing and Tailscale. I use a combination of Apple Time Machine and Arq. ![]() Files on disk can also be backed up independently. no mobile apps or web UI, but I use OneDrive for those files that I need to share or access elsewhere. This means most of my files are entirely private and encrypted and can sync very fast over my local network. Indeed, for privacy reasons I have been using Syncthing connected over a private P2P network using Tailscale. The app may provide its own sync service, but I want the option to choose Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud Drive or some other system. This is how I was keeping a backup of all my Apple Notes.Īnother advantage of using files on disk is that I can control how they sync. The only way around this is using the Apple Privacy data download service which allows you to export Apple Notes as HTML with their associated attachments. In the latest macOS releases, there are even restrictions on accessing the directory!Īpple Notes doesn’t have an export option except individual notes as PDFs. It’s usually dangerous to meddle with app files like this. They are contained in a SQLite database in ~/Library/Group Containers/ alongside attachments and images organised by internal note IDs. I can’t easily see or edit the individual notes on disk to make backups or export. This worked better (until the bugs started appearing), but is a proprietary database format. The “new” Apple Notes app moved away from IMAP to iCloud sync. Backlinks showing up at the bottom of a note in Craft. Cross-linking between notes is therefore a requirement for me. The magic is that it happens automatically when you use the same phrasing or keywords. The main benefit is being able to discover unlinked references to other notes you’d forgotten. This has never been possible in Apple Notes – each note is independent, and remains so even in the latest release – but products like Roam Research have made this technique popular. In recent years, the idea of cross-linking, backlinks and wiki-style linking has become common. This is the best way to ensure the files are accessible into the future and can be migrated to different apps if necessary. Markdown is a well understood format that has many apps that can edit and render on any platform. This means using Markdown formatting saved to a plain text file. I’d like to be able to embed images (files managed by the app), make lists and include headings to structure the notes. ![]() I want to write my notes in plain text with basic formatting. Requirements for a note taking app Simplicity + Cross Linking The best note taking apps for Mac are Craft, Obsidian, Logseq and iA Writer. This is an updated blog post (Jun 2022) that reviews the last few years of trying different note taking apps and what I finally ended up switching to. I had already started a search for an Apple Notes alternative that used Markdown, was cross platform, and allowed me to control the source files. Having enjoyed Apple’s minimalist approach to the new Notes app launched as part of the 2016 release of iOS 9 and OS X 10.11, and having built up >1k notes ranging from book highlights to saved web pages to meeting notes to journal articles, bugs in iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 triggered my search for alternatives.Īpple sorted out a lot of those issues in subsequent releases – sync bugs, search bugs, crashes – but it was too late. Back in Nov 2019 when I first wrote this blog post, the context for rethinking my note taking setup was based around growing problems with Apple’s software quality.

Choral repertoire lists1/17/2024 ![]() In contrast, eighth grade choruses will generally have more low voices and fewer high. Sixth grade choruses will have more high voices and fewer low. ![]() Each grade level has significant strengths and weaknesses. It is also helpful to combine grade levels for middle school male choruses. Personally, I believe that carefully selected TTB music is the best solution, using the ranges listed above. It also emphasizes that singing is a “guy thing.” As is the case with mixed chorus repertoire, one must be careful to select repertoire that has vocal parts for guys in all stages of vocal maturation. This allows the boys to go through the voice change without the potential embarrassment of singing in front of the girls. I have also found it beneficial to actually separate the boys and girls at the middle school level. This is the music I recommend most often for middle school mixed choruses. Fortunately, in the last several years, more and more of these voicings include optional baritone parts. Too often, however, the new baritones get slighted in three-part mixed music. And the beginning changed voices can comfortably sing the lowest part in most three-part mixed pieces. The higher guys can often still sing the alto part. But in most middle school mixed choirs, two-part music generally does not provide enough parts for the variety of voice parts present. With the voice change, two-part music with equal ranges just doesn’t work any longer. In my sixth grade mixed chorus, I often use specifically chosen two-part music in which the range of part II is generally A to A. However, I personally prefer to combine them with the beginning changed voices on the alto part. Unchanged voices can often sing the soprano part. When it comes to mixed voice repertoire, you will need to make sure that there are parts for each of these broad categories. Don’t neglect them-they often become great singers once their voices have stabilized. They need individual attention and lots of encouragement. (Privately, I jokingly call them my “subterranean basses!”) It is certainly difficult to consider these guys when selecting repertoire. There are also a few guys with voices that have changed quickly and have a hard time matching pitch, except for a few notes at the very bottom of the bass clef. Range-ready repertoire for developing TTB choirs can be found in my book The Cambiata Collection. When searching for music for tenor/bass choirs, I suggest seeking out TTB voicings that adhere to these vocal ranges. Finally, there are those boys who have voices that have dropped lower, from around the Bb an octave below middle C to the A or Bb just below middle C. This is the range often referred to as Part III in three-part mixed pieces. ![]() There are also middle-voice guys who are more comfortable around middle C, usually from the F or G below to the D or Eb right above. I personally call them Tenor 1, even though they are actually more like altos. The A below middle C to the A above is a comfortable tessitura for most of these guys. High voices include those boys who have voices that are unchanged or in the first stages of change-cambiata voices. Think of adolescent male voices in terms of tessituras: high, middle, and low. Although many authorities have come up with specific ranges and labels, I find it more useful to think of voice ranges in practical terms as they relate to repertoire: what pieces and voicings will fit the variety of voice types found in the average middle school choir? No doubt the adolescent male voice change impacts middle school choruses more significantly than at any other level. Perhaps the most challenging issue facing middle school choral directors is finding appropriate repertoire for their choirs.

![]() The three modulators are really the star of the show – and the argument for why the Acid V needs to exist. You know the drill: Arturia’s effects and instruments really get interesting once you click the “advanced” button, which you should do even if you aren’t advanced. Bass Boost pushes the level of the SUB OSC so the combination of those two is terrific for thickening sound. Accent Attack is actually a bit too subtle to hear most of the time but softens the attack parameter. Pitch Tracking sets accuracy and Noise Gain adds, uh, noise those two can be dialed in for special effects or to emulate aging hardware. ![]() The Clipper is my favorite, setting a value for internal clipping and allowing some really edgy variations of sounds. That includes a pulse width control, which makes the rectangle oscillator a lot more interesting, and an extended cutoff range (since Roland engineers limited the upper-end cutoff on the original device). Voice settingsĬlick the up arrow above ACID V, and you get a range of Voice Settings that correspond to common hardware hacks of the original TB-303 – like the best-in-class Devilfish mods. Distortion algorithms (in pop-up), plus Voice Settings – tweakable parameters – at top. Honestly, if a single section made me wish Arturia made this instrument as hardware, it’d be the distortion section. There’s greater diversity than in some competing products, and it’s convenient to be able to dial these in exactly and save them with a patch. Anyone playing the Arturia drinking game, take a shot.) These nicely vary from very subtle to very intense – I’m especially fond of that raunchy transistor. It’s enabled per-step in the sequence, which is great for variations, though it doesn’t retrigger – so if you toggle a series of adjacent steps, it’ll continue to modulate uninterrupted.ĭISTORTION gives you a ton of options, as you’d expect, including tape, tube, transistor, diode, crunch, overdrive, something called “thick,” and other models. VIBRATO is basically a fixed LFO that can be extended from slow pitch drift all the way up to audio-rate, FM-style modulation. ![]() ![]() The SUB OSC is a big deal, especially as you can push its level up with the BASS BOOST voice setting. You’ll also see some immediate additions. You can’t program 303-style on the Acid V – there’s only the modern sequencer option – so you’ll use those buttons mainly for transposition and simple triggering. The main UI gives you all the basic 303 controls – pitch, cutoff, resonance, env mod, decay, accent, and the waveform switch, plus a row of trigger-able buttons and HOLD. But let’s look what’s going on on the interface. If you just want a strong 303 emulation, some more out-there acid-y extras, and a bunch of preset patterns and sounds, Arturia of course has you covered. So let’s instead assume that what’s appealing about Arturia’s take is the ability to expand on what a 303 is and add in other ideas. I doubt seriously you’d choose this one for authenticity alone, though, given the competition from Roland Cloud, Audiorealism, and D16, among others. The Acid V sounds really good, and you can tweak it in a way that makes it sound like original 303 hardware – or even what you imagine sounds more like the original hardware – with voice settings. There are also some nice extras like the ability to map the hold to a sustain pedal. 3 modulators, routable to nearly everything (only the voice settings are missing – you can even route modulation to sequencer rate).Randomization for generating new patterns.Advanced 64-step sequencer/arp with scale constrain feature (and yes, you can define custom scales).Voice settings for tweaking parameters, akin to 303 hardware mods (filter cutoff range, pulse width, etc.).Sub oscillator (with rect, saw, and sine waves and octave control, and the ability to pair with bass boost).Vibrato (including per-step sequence control). So let’s start with what’s on the Acid V that isn’t on an original TB-303: The Acid V looks like a 303, and covers all the basics with their usual oversized skeuomorphic look. But with Acid V, they’re moving into pretty crowded waters, as a hardware and software recreations of the Roland original abound. Arturia’s soft synth collection includes some exceptional and rarely-emulated instruments.

Blue bee restaurant1/17/2024 I’ll surely be ordering the chowda again! Celena S.Blue Bee Cider vacated the space late last year. I’m excited to go back and have a meal here. We only sat at the bar for drinks and apps. Not gross like it was made bad, just gross as in he did not like the flavor at all. He said they were good but the dirty Pepe was gross. My husband had a bunch of oyster shooters and the oysters were good but not fully shucked and the one that was still had the piece that attaches they oyster to the shell on it. ![]() The blueberries were fresh and not soft or squishy at all. I had the blueberry pomegranate mimosa and it was delicious. I decided to try it and was ridiculously surprised! It was as if I was home eating it in a Maine restaurant!!! It’s by far the best clam chowder outside of New England that I’ve ever had!!! I asked the waitress if the clam chowder was made here or not and she said it was made fresh and it’s amazing. Usually it’s all potatoes and filler with odd spices and very few clams. I’m very hesitant to order clam chowder because no one makes it like they do in New England. Oh yeah, the bread you get when you sit down is awesome. The rice pilaf and spinach were very yummy, just needed some vinegar on the spinach. Crispy on the outside, moist and tasty on the inside. I had the Catfish Louisiane and my wife the Ahi Tuna salad.īoth were very, very good. The items, some appeal, some not as much but everything looks pretty good, particularly if you love fishes and such. The menu is a very good size, not too much, not too little. She was friendly with plenty of smiles and was always there before we knew we needed anything. Hate the super high ceilings because there’s a bit too much noise. We only came here because the other restaurant we were planning to eat at was unexpectedly closed and someone had mentioned this place was good. We have obviously made some mistakes here and there but chief among them is not making it to Cafe Blue sooner! For this, I apologize and we will make up for it. We have lived in the area for a bit over 2 years. I’ll definitely be back to try on more of your incredible menu. Thanks, Cafe Blue for a most enjoyable brunch dining experience. And the zesty coleslaw was exactly on the mark as was the Cajun remoulade. I could not restrain myself from the tasty rice pilaf. The coconut shrimp were a bit overcooked, and showed it by being a tad on the rubbery side. Perfectly tasty, but not quite Cafe du Monde standards. I’d say “doughy” to describe the more bread-like consistency, but don’t take that to mean they were underfried. The beignets were perfectly fried, but not quite as airy inside as they should be. ![]() The waiter told us that brunch comes with a complimentary order of two beignets, which were very much welcomed, even in midsummer Texas. What we chose to do is to start with an appetizer of coconut shrimp and share a lunch order of the lump crab cakes. Their menu is one of those that you could literally blindfold yourself and pick a winner. While mulling over the brunching options, he started us with water and a bottle of La Crema Pinot Gris. Our server was Ian, and we found him to be most helpful and prompt. ![]() Went here for Saturday brunch early afternoon with a lady friend based on her positive past experiences.
